My father was a stake president for a time and a bishop and during these years one of our favorite family pass times was playing spoons which is played with face cards. Gambling is an issue - but playing go fish, spoons, kings corner, and other fun and non gambling games are not an issue. I have never heard of a single person being led to gamble because they possess face cards in their home. Those issues are usually money driven, and less about the cards themselves. Like the internet, cards can be a tool for harmless family fun, or they can be a tool of destruction.

I cannot begin to fully understand what "spotted" face cards are. I'm not sure what that even refers to specifically. All I know is that I've asked multiple leaders about this, and it was always considered just a reference to gambling or Elder McConkie's opinion, not church doctrine. I love Elder McConkie.. he's a relative, but in this I believe, he is expressing opinion, and not doctrine.
