Question

Dear Gramps,

What is the Mormon Church’s view on guardian angels, especially in light of an American movement that proposes that we can communicate with our guardian angel?

Sandra

Answer

Dear Sandra,

It is my understanding that we do not have a particular angel assigned as our guardian angel, but undoubtedly the angels are near us, and at appropriate times and circumstances may act to protect us from evil, harm and danger. In the words of President Joseph Fielding Smith Jr.,

“We have often heard of guardian angels attending us and many patriarchs have spoken of such protection. There are times no doubt when some unseen power directs us and leads us from harm. However, the true guardian angel given to every man who comes into the world is the Light of Truth or Spirit of Christ.” (Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.1, p.54)
