While I was there, Bruce R. McConkie came to organize a few stakes. While speaking to us missionaries in a closed meeting he told us that while he was in Valparaiso, a city on the central coast of Chile, he was walking along the shore with several local church leaders. He stopped suddenly and turned to the sea. After a long moment without speaking, he turned to the local church leaders and proclaimed, “Brethren, the soil upon which we walk is holy ground.” “Why is that?”, they asked. Elder McConkie responded confidently, “This is where Lehi landed.” So the scholars were right. Lehi and his family landed on the west coast of South America, specifically, the central coast of today’s country of Chile.
