The Lord knows who is worthy and who is not.

Yes, bishops always have access to the gift of discernment, as this is a gift of the spirit; however, this gift is dependent upon the bishop as well. We both know individuals who have lied in their interview; however, in these cases, the judgement is upon the individual lying not the bishop. It would be nice if all leaders were perfect, as Christ was, with regards to discernment, but we are not. Thus, the person lying will be held accountable before the Lord for their lies, not the bishop.

Though the poster’s dilemma as to how can blatantly unworthy people enter the Lord’s house and participate therein under false pretenses, he seems to forget one HUGE principle: FREE AGENCY. Ergo, the Temple recommend questions, though some are quite specific (and to a bishop that knows his charges well, rather self-evident), are largely a self-assessment. When you get right down to it, the whole affair IS between the TR prospect and the Lord. His rep (the bishop) merely gets to pose the questions and sign the chit. If someone is so dead in their conscience that they’ll enter the Lord’s house unworthy,knowing full well what they do, then it’s THEIR condemnation. It doesn’t actually, IMO, take away from the Lord’s House itself, because I’m sure that our Lord doesn’t allow what He considers precious to be diminished by the misdeeds of the misguided. So, Joshua, I’d say work out your own salvation with ‘fear and trembling’ (Phillipians 2:12), and if you can attend the Temple with a clear conscience yourself with a clear and uplifted spirit, by all means do so, often!
