During those times when I don't feel the Spirit in my prayer, I turn it into a gratitude prayer. I forget about asking for anything and just start with the day of my birth and go through my entire life with the Lord, thanking Him for everything I can think of. For being sent to angel parents, for my wife and our happy marriage, for each one of our children, etc., etc. I go though and mention ever spiritual experience I ever had, and every blessing I can think of. Sometimes it takes me an hour to do so. But when I'm done, the Spirit is always there and it is strong. I can't recommend the gratitude prayer highly enough.

I learned through my own depression and feeling like this that I was looking at this wrong. My prayers went through the ceiling and were heard.... what I couldn't hear was the answer! So many times depression has an effect on not only the body but the spirit and it lessens our ability to feel the Lord's love or hear his voice because depression seems to dampen it like being stuck inside a padded, isolated room.

I remember asking for a priesthood blessing to release me from this heavy darkness that I may once more feel the light - and without fail, each time I was granted this in one way or another, and was once more able to feel His love and His spirit with me, answering as He always had.

At times we may feel abandoned, but it is the veil of mortality and the difficulty of how we see through a glass darkly that dampens our ability to hear him, but he is ALWAYS there, and ALWAYS answers.
