Going slightly off the topic, but this hymn has always had a special place in my heart and I have had several meaningful and sacred experiences associated with it. I can rarely sing it without getting teary eyed. I can remember a time when I was going through a particularly difficult period and the second half of the second verse came into my mind as if an answer to prayer..."Gird up your loins, fresh courage take, Our God will never us forsake..." That was the message that I needed to hear at that time. As difficult as things were, Heavenly Father was still there and was not going to forsake me. And indeed He didn't and in other times of difficulty that I've had He is still there.

Who are we remembering when we sing this song ? People starving, people starving themselves so they can give a tiny tidbit to a child. People on their last legs, both starving and freezing to death and yet still carrying on. People who have met the test and are still going. These were not complacent people. These are heroes, in every sense of the word. It did not stop here, but continued on when they arrived, and proceeded on with their lives. None fell away. These are people so focused that they overcame the world. Would that we do the same.
