I've talked to over a dozen students who have left the Church after attending BYU Provo. All of these left because of how they were treated by others or how other LDS people behaved and not because of some profound doctrinal issue (surprises me). Things ranged from stealing of student grants to seriously dishonest academic things to blatant segregationalist behavior (there are few checks and balances over staff and administration). I have heard that some become disenchanted with doctrinal issues, and some because of what some professors teach about our doctrine. I think it is vastly important to understand that BYU is not the Church. It is a wonderful place and is a beautiful campus. However, sometimes leaving BYU is a really, really good thing. It also will not make your future any less bright to go elsewhere. The main thing is that you leave there intact and with your testimony, in spite of what goes on there at times. If you do not----then keep your mind and heart open and listen and wait and do the right thing. There are better LDS people elsewhere who come from different more loving and caring, Christ-like cultures.

In reply to <a href="https://askgramps.org/why-does-byu-expel-students-who-have-left-the-curch/#comment-34553">Liz Perrott</a>.

Hello Liz, being honest doesn't mean consequences should be removed, and those who "pretend" should have the integrity to leave also. A person who breaks the law and is not caught, and then tells the truth later, will still suffer the consequences of the law. A person who breaks the law and is not caught and doesn't have the integrity to come forth is not penalized also. The law should not be removed because of the lack of integrity of the second example. I would applaud the first individual who was taught and lived the good principles he/she was taught. As the old saying goes, "Do what is right and let the consequence follow." There are plenty of other schools they can attend, and they don't have to "pretend" to be anything. They just need to exercise more integrity.

what concerns me is that this policy could encourage students to hide their wish to leave the church and just go through the motions until they have graduated. If they have been taught to be truthful and honourable, a student who wants to be honest about wishing to leave the church is penalised whereas one who pretends to go along with the church will ' get away ' with it.
