I am pretty sure that the TV show you are referencing is "Big Love" on HBO. I have watched the entire series. It actually does a very good job of separating today's polygamist from the modern LDS Church. Although I know many members were offended by the show, there were many part of it, "that are a reflection in the mirror". I think that reflection is hard for people to watch.
,
Granted it is a show for entertainment. It is fiction and it is unmerciful to the "Compound Polygamists", - assumed to be the Warren Jeffs' group in Short Creek (Hildale & Colorado City). They even call the compound in the show - Juniper Creek. They present the older prophet much more favorably than his son - Alby - or Warren Jeffs. The show presents Alby as the awful person that Warren Jeffs is in real life.
I would not be afraid to watch the series - especially the first three season. There is one part that will be very offensive to LDS members and that is a portion of the Tempe ceremony is shown. I guess one of the creators of the series grew up on a polygamist compound and I was unaware at the time that FLDS use Tempe ceremony as well. (I did some research and the FLDS use the original ceremony practiced in the original Temples. I think we forget that until 1932, the FLDS did not exist. So when they left, they took much of the LDS doctrine and ceremony with them.)
I did some consulting work for two gentlemen from Short Creek (Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona). They seemed just like any other LDS member I have known. Very nice and pleasant men. They were very sincere. They bore to me their testimony of their faith in the Book of Mormon and also in Warren Jeffs as the true prophet on earth. I was polite and listened, but in my heart I know they are fools for following this false prophet. But they are so blinded by their faith, they cannot see through it.
So before you judge the HBO Series "Big Love", you might watch it first. It is more true to life than is comfortable.
