Liz, I wouldn't say that the inclinations that the women you mentioned were invalid, just maybe a bit misplaced. A scripture in the Doctrine and Covenants (modern scripture revealed to Joseph Smith) states that if you have desires to serve God, you are called to the work. Having a desire to serve in the kingdom is a good thing, and it can certainly come from God. The thing is, we don't get to tell God where or how He will put us to use in His service. A mad who has a burning desire to serve does not get put in the front of the line to be the next bishop of his ward. If someone (man or woman) wants to serve more meaningfully, they can discuss it with their leaders who will pray for inspiration as to where that members talents can be used.

I am not a member, but see parallels between this and the RC churches ban on even discussing the question of ordination for Women. I have never had a wish to be a priest in any church, but I do know women in both the RC church and I have talked to one LDS women who sincerely believe that God has called either them personally or women in general to the priesthood. Are we saying here, that those strong responses to womens prayers are invalid?

Thank you for a very thorough, very clear explanation of this currently hot topic. I have never had an issue with the fact that I don't hold the Priesthood the same as men and I've been really surprised and puzzled by some of the arguments made by those who think women should be ordained to the Priesthood.

Great treatment, but let’s clarify one thing: “blacks” were never restricted from holding Priesthood offices; “Negroes” were. There were plenty of black Latter-day Saints who held Priesthood offices before the 1978 revelation. The restrictions were upon people—regardless of skin color—who were believed (perhaps accurately) to be descended from Noah’s son Canaan. Since this group has a high rate of coincidence with black people, most people failed to notice the distinction. Interestingly, this is outlined in the opening pages of the very book you cited, Edward L. Kimball’s Spencer W. Kimball and the Revelation on Priesthood.
