Good answer. Reading President Packer's advice, it doesn't give insight into when things may or may not happen either. Yes, WW3 could happen in the next 3 years or 30, the second coming and millenium in 5 or 50, however the promise is that these things won't dash our dreams. Disaster, sickness, war and calamity are very real threats that we must deal with on a daily basis. The goal should always be, to be as worthy as possible every day. If a person does that they will have nothing to fear.

In reply to <a href="https://askgramps.org/world-war-iii-imminent/#comment-35728">Douglas Self</a>.

Excellent comments.
While of course there is war going on now, since the advent of nuclear weapons and the end of WWII, there has been a significant change to the nature of warfare. Far fewer people have died in current wars, than historically have died in wars period. "Great powers" have not fought against one another for over half a century, the wars have been between large developed countries, and smaller less developed countries (France/Algeria, US/Iraq, Russia/Georgia). There simply has not been bloodshed on the scale of WWI and WWII and its predecessors, and the worst wars in recent decades have largely been civil wars. People are far more likely to be killed at the hands of their fellow countrymen than by the boogie man across the ocean. In fact, for all the rumors of war going on, the last three generations have seen a monumental amount of peace, or at least not warfighting, in all of recorded history.

Whether or not there is a third world war is not necessarily related to the timing of the Lord's coming. Many people are very inclined to prepare physically for a collapse of civilization, and create a great deal of anxiety and speculation about it, but far less urgent to prepare to meet the Lord. The Skousen family are an interesting bunch to observe, they have made some great contributions to multiple fields, and always bring their own brand of flair to whatever they do.

WAR is inevitable, as it seems that whether individually or as nations, it's the predisposition of the 'natural man' to resort to violence as a solution.
Now, as to whether the nuclear apocalypse that is the fodder of much science fiction and political speculation will happen, it does seem that weapons have a way of being used in one form or another. However, it's been the goal of the US military to seek non-nuclear solutions to missions that, under what was once known as SIOP (Single Integrated Operational Plan, the one-time US plan to fight a nuclear conflict). An actual nuclear war, if indeed it ever did break out, would likely be far different than what's been postulated in fiction or speculation. Certainly no Soviet or Russian planner would contemplate an all-out strike against the primary US population centers, which would leave the President with but the option to respond in kind, as that's the essence of "MAD" (Mutually Assured Destruction.
Back in the early 80's, when there a plan to build a railroad-based 'circuit' in Eastern Nevada and Western Utah to cycle the new MX ICBMs, which would have put these missiles, instead of in hardened silos, in mobile rail cars, to be run out to various firing stations on the circuits when on 'alert'. The Church spoke its opposition to such a plan; which would seem contradictory to its supposed US form of 'conservatism'. A form of nuclear NIMBY, perhaps? However, having Elder Richard G. Scott, with his experience in the Navy's nuclear program, might have influenced such a declaration. Certain Elder Scott knew of the Trident II D5 SLBM, to be used aboard the then-new Ohio-Class SSBNs, and the W88 thermonuclear warhead. With the missile's range, and, most important, ACCURACY, and the max yield of the W88 ('published' as 475 kT), the USN would soon be able to fulfill the mission intended of the Air Force's MX, that is, the ability to hit the Soviet/Russian command and leadership in their hardened bunkers and knock them out with a 'decapitation' strike, and, give the President further ability to ride out a Soviet first strike (obviously to ensure that it was genuine) before commitment.
Whatever misfortune may befall any of us, be assured that the Lord knows what he's doing. In 1942, with war raging in both Europe, Africa, and the Pacific, the First Presidency issued a statement about war, with the concluding statement, "God is at the helm". Or, as "Lord Vader" might put it, "The ability to split the atom and blow things up is INSIGNIFICANT compared to the power of the Priesthood".

But if you want some speculation as to how a box seat to the world's 'end' might look, the BBC did an interesting docudrama recently, in several versions...
