Question

Gramps,

My question is short, as I was not able to find any info in your archives. Have the General Authorities, at any time, said anything, pro or con, about soap operas?  Thanks Gramps.

Jacqueline

Answer

Hi Jacqueline,

I hope you weren’t hoping for a “pro” comment about soap operas. That may be a bit difficult to come by.

Here’s what I could find:

Neal A Maxwell

“We are lathered with soap operas in need of nothing so much as soap—for the scrubbing of themselves! Some seriously maintain that media violence and sleaze leave consumers untouched. But revenue is received from commercials precisely because of their influence. Either we deserve reforms, or sponsors deserve refunds!”

M.Russell Ballard

“And don’t allow yourself to be caught up in the time-wasting, mind-numbing things like television soap operas or surfing the Internet. Turn to the Lord in faith, and you will know what to do and how to do it.”

David B. Haight

“This growing presence of obscenity has been aided by the lowering of media standards for advertising, by relaxed movie ratings, by television soap operas and situation comedies [sitcoms] that use their powerful voices to justify, glamorize, and encourage sexual relations outside of marriage.”

I expect there are more. I think it’s pretty clear, however, that the brethren are not exactly fans of the genre.
