Question

Dear Gramps,

I remember from my childhood hearing about prophecy that says the city of Enoch will return to the earth, that the land has continually grown as the people of Enoch, in their perfection, don’t die, and that the return of this land will cause a cataclysmic event….But I can’t find anything on it in the scriptures. Am I looking in the wrong places (the standard works)? Does this tale come from apocrypha, or did the teller tell me pipe dreams? I think it’s a fascinating story. Thanks!

Kelly

Answer

Kelly,

For generations, the story of Enoch and his city—Zion—has inspired hope among the faithful, particularly within the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to both ancient scripture and modern revelation, Enoch’s city was so righteous that God took it from the earth, promising its return as a moment of monumental significance in the last days. But why must this translated city descend? What purpose does this future reunion serve, both cosmically and personally?

The figure of Enoch holds a unique place in both biblical and Latter-day Saint traditions. In the early Genesis account, Enoch “walked with God: and he was not; for God took him” (Genesis 5:24). The restored scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expand this narrative dramatically: Enoch gathered a community so unified and pure that they earned the name Zion, “because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them” (Moses 7:18). According to these scriptures, their collective righteousness led to their translation—they and their city were taken up from the earth to abide with God until a prophesied day of return.

Translation is a significant doctrine in this context. Unlike the full resurrection, translation is described as a change that allows beings to live without sickness or death, aiding in God’s work while not yet receiving a glorified, resurrected body. Some Latter-day Saint thinkers have posited that translation is a priesthood ordinance, sharing patterns with other saving rites and potentially possessing future stewardship implications.

But the city’s departure is only the first act. The promise lingers: Zion—the City of Holiness—will return. Ancient Enoch’s experience thus provides the blueprints for faithful communities through the ages, including the Latter-day Saints, who are admonished to build their own Zion, an echo of Enoch’s unity, purity, and care for the poor.

Modern revelation in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is explicit about Enoch’s city and the eventual merger of heavenly and earthly Zions. The Book of Moses (in the Pearl of Great Price) recounts Enoch’s querying of the Lord: “When shall the earth rest?” The Lord responds with a sweeping prophecy:

Righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I send forth out of the earth…to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City…the tabernacle of the Lord shall be with them. (Moses 7:62)

Doctrine and Covenants 45:11-14, 66-71 describes Zion coming down from heaven. The heavenly Zion (Enoch’s city) will unite with the earthly Zion (the New Jerusalem). This is sometimes described as a great reunion of two Zions.

So what will this reunion look like?

According to LDS teachings:

The New Jerusalem will be built on the American continent.

The City of Enoch will descend from heaven.

The two Zion communities will embrace or unite.

This occurs in preparation for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

This prepares the way for two cities—the New Jerusalem to be built by present-day Saints, and Enoch’s Zion—to meet in a transcendent union:

Then shalt thou and all thy city meet them there, and we will receive them into our bosom, and they shall see us; and we will fall upon their necks, and they shall fall upon our necks, and we will kiss each other; and there shall be mine abode…and for the space of a thousand years the earth shall rest.” (Moses 7:63-64)

This moment is both literal and symbolic—a reunion not just of peoples, but of heaven and earth, past and future, spiritual and temporal. It will mark the dawn of the Millennium, a time of peace and divine presence.

Joseph Smith, founder of the Church, clarified that this event would be more than a symbolic restoration. Men and angels, the living and the translated, would be “co-workers in bringing to pass this great work,” and in this fusion of communities, the full “renovation of the earth” would begin. Some suggest that, just as keys of priesthood were restored from heavenly messengers representing past dispensations, Enoch may return to deliver stewardship over translation or other knowledge essential for millennial living.

Here are what some of the other early leaders have said about the City of Enoch:

Brigham Young:

He explained that when Zion is built on the earth:

The Saints must become pure enough to receive Enoch’s people.

Then the two Zion societies will meet and embrace.

He stated (Journal of Discourses):

“When we have prepared Zion… the Zion of Enoch will come and join with us.”

Orson Pratt, an early apostle known for explaining doctrine in detail, taught that:

The New Jerusalem will be built in Jackson County.

The City of Enoch will descend and unite with it.

He described the reunion of the two cities as a literal event where translated beings return to the earth to live among the righteous.

Why must Enoch’s city return rather than simply remain a spiritual example? Several layers of meaning emerge from restored scripture and commentary.

The very purpose of the “dispensation of the fullness of times” is to gather together all former dispensations and unite them in Christ. As such, the return of Enoch’s Zion stands as both a fulfillment and a symbol—a gathering of the righteous who, across ages, sought peace and union with God.

Prophets have taught that during the Millennium, resurrected beings, translated beings, and mortals will labor together for the salvation of mankind. Enoch’s city, having already achieved such unity and righteousness, can assist, strengthen, and perhaps share hidden knowledge or spiritual gifts, aiding earth’s final preparation to “fill the measure of her creation.” As Hugh Nibley and others note, apocryphal writings describe Enoch’s community as guardians of divine knowledge, suggesting their return may facilitate millennial harmony and progress.

The Joseph Smith Translation of Genesis renders the rainbow not just as a sign of no more global floods, but also as a token of God’s covenant with Enoch: when humanity is ready—obedient, unified, and seeking upward—then Enoch’s Zion will return, “and all the heavens shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy.

The language of meeting—falling on each other’s necks, embracing, sharing tears and joy—displays emotional and spiritual reconciliation. Latter-day Saints believe the Millennium will bring not only rest to the earth but healing to human hearts, as long-separated peoples and dispensations unite in holy friendship.

For members of the Church today, the doctrine of Enoch’s city and its return is not a remote apocalyptic detail; it is a living summons. Modern scripture consistently ties the readiness for Zion’s return to the creation of a present-day Zion—one marked by unity, purity, and caring for the poor and needy. Thus, the New Jerusalem is not a gift to be handed down, but a city painstakingly built—spiritually and physically—by covenant-keepers across the globe.

Hugh Nibley and other scholars have drawn parallels between early Christian communities, separatists, and those who sought to live according to the pattern of Enoch’s city. The task set before contemporary Saints is to gather out mine elect, to practice the same unity and righteousness, and to join in the work of salvation with the confidence that their efforts are part of an ancient, ongoing project. The rainbow, then, becomes a sign not just of peace but of a still-pending homecoming.

Gramps,

Is the man who will be the prophet during the second coming already on the earth?

Sam

Answer

Sam,

The simple answer? We don’t know.

The expectation of the Second Coming is based on the promises of scripture, where Christ Himself taught that “no man” would know the day or hour of His return, likening it to a “thief in the night” (see Matthew 24:42-44; Mark 13:32; 1 Thessalonians 5:2). This doctrine instills both a sense of readiness and caution against predictions not based on revelation.

A question sometimes arises among members: Could the Second Coming have already begun in some sense, perhaps with the Restoration through Joseph Smith, and the “great and dreadful day” would be a final climactic event? Scrutiny of scripture and prophetic commentary makes key distinctions:

The Restoration as Prelude, Not Fulfillment: The appearance of God the Father and Jesus Christ to Joseph Smith in 1820 ended a long period known as the Great Apostasy, restoring priesthood authority and the fullness of the gospel. This ushered in the “last days” but does not constitute the Second Coming itself. When the Savior returns, it “will not be to the meekness of the manger, it will be as the recognized Redeemer and Lord of the Universe … and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5).

Events Preceding the Second Coming: As described in Doctrine and Covenants 88:95-98, the actual Second Coming will be a global, unmistakable event: “…the curtain of heaven [shall be] unfolded, as a scroll … the face of the Lord shall be unveiled; and the saints that are upon the earth … shall be caught up to meet him. And they who have slept in their graves shall come forth …”.

The First Resurrection and the Millennium: The “first resurrection”—the raising up of the righteous dead—will indeed occur just before the Millennium, as part of this final, world-revealing manifestation. This event marks the beginning of Christ’s thousand-year reign on earth.

The thrust of these teachings is that while preparatory events may unfold gradually—restoration, gathering of Israel, fulfillment of prophecy—the Second Coming is singular and universally manifest. As Paul told the Thessalonians, “the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night,” but the Saints “are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief” because, empowered by restored revelation, they can prepare spiritually.

In an era of information overload and trending rumors, it is natural for members to seek concrete signs—perhaps a modern-day counterpart to Samuel the Lamanite, who pronounced specific prophetic warnings to the Nephites. However, the Lord has established a particular pattern for prophetic guidance in our day, and it differs from the more spectacular methods sometimes seen in scripture:

The Appointed Pattern for Revelation: According to Doctrine and Covenants 42:11 and 43:2-7, only those who are ordained and acknowledged by the presiding authorities of the Church are authorized to reveal commandments and lead the people. The Prophet—the President of The Church—is “appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations from my hand.” Any teaching outside this channel is to be viewed skeptically.

Counsel from Prophets about Prophets: President Joseph F. Smith once stated, “Whenever you see a man rise up claiming to have received direct revelation from the Lord to the Church, independent of the order and channel of the Priesthood, you may set him down as an impostor.” The Lord’s pattern is for revelation to guide the entire Church through His established authorities, not through dramatic outside actors or self-designated visionaries.

Scriptures as the Primary Source of Signs: While longing for additional prophecy is understandable, we are counseled not to “look beyond the mark.” Harold B. Lee softened speculative fears by urging: “Are you priesthood bearers aware of the fact that we need no such publications to be forewarned, if we were only conversant with what the scriptures have already spoken to us in plainness?” The careful study of scriptural prophecy, particularly from sources such as Matthew 24, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Book of Mormon, provides all the guidance necessary for preparation.

Role of Modern Prophets: Members today have 15 Prophets, Seers, and Revelators—the First Presidency and the Quorum of Twelve Apostles—set apart to lead. These men are sustained as “watchmen on the tower,” providing inspired counsel in both spiritual and practical matters.

Thus, the Lord’s pattern for this dispensation is clearly delineated and designed to protect the Church from deception, speculation, and anxiety.

For many, the world’s instability leads to anxiety about the timing and magnitude of coming events. Two frequent concerns arise among members: Do comments by inspired leaders suggest the end is imminent? And should rumors—such as the “tent cities” theory—be taken seriously?

Jesus said of His return: “But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels … neither the Son, but the Father” (Mark 13:32). President Boyd K. Packer, in his 2011 talk “Counsel to Youth,” addressed youth who feared that they might not achieve life’s milestones before the end: “Not so! You can look forward to doing it right – getting married, having a family, seeing your children and grandchildren, maybe even great-grandchildren.” He repeated this counsel from previous years, emphasizing that “the end cannot come until all of the purposes of the Lord are fulfilled. Everything that I have learned from the revelations and from life convinces me that there is time and to spare for you to carefully prepare for a long life.”

It is common for voices outside of prophetic authority—often political commentators or those with dramatic dreams—to attempt to forecast disasters or call members to specific preparation schemes. The Church has directly addressed ideas like the “tent cities” theory, where some claim the Prophet will call members to refuges in the wilderness before catastrophes. Historical and scriptural precedent exists for the Lord calling His people to safety, such as Lot, Noah, or Lehi. However, the current, consistent counsel from the Church is centered around prudent preparation, not extreme measures: “We encourage members worldwide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings. We ask that you be wise, and do not go to extremes.”

The Church’s pattern—both ancient and modern—is one of heeding inspired leadership. For example, Christians survived the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 by following Christ’s prophecies and fleeing when appropriate. This underscores not panic, but quiet, humble obedience and listening for the Spirit.

With advancing technology and cultural sophistication, some may imagine that God’s pattern of working through living prophets is antiquated. Yet, as Hugh Nibley writes, “Do you think the God of heaven is going to come unannounced by prophets? God’s declared policy of testing the world by the sending of prophets from time to time was not abrogated two thousand years ago. … Our message is that God has called prophets again in these days and that the world might well heed their words.”

This is more than a comforting belief; it is the defining point of the Restoration—the assertion that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operates under living prophetic direction. The world’s response to this fact is itself a test. Prophets do not simply predict; they teach repentance, give warning, guide temporal and spiritual preparation, and point continually to Christ. The existence and guidance of living prophets is the contemporary fulfillment of God’s ancient model and the most important “sign” of the times for our generation.

Question

Gramps,

Can you give details of the final war with Antichrist in the bible?

Thomas

Answer

Thomas

The teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints emphasize that the war initiated in heaven has not concluded; rather, it has transitioned to Earth, where Satan continues to wage war for the souls of humanity. Ephesians 6:11 warns believers to “put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” This spiritual warfare manifests in various forms, including temptation, deception, and the influence of evil spirits. The Church teaches that individuals must remain vigilant and steadfast in their faith to resist these influences.

N. Eldon Tanner had this to say:

The great unrest in the world today and the wars and rumors of wars are affecting us greatly; but as Paul says, our greatest and most deadly struggle will be ‘not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, [and] against spiritual wickedness in high places.’…

Do we fight against the evils around us-pornography, abortion, tobacco, alcohol, drugs? Do we have the courage to stand up for our convictions? Can we truly say we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ? Do we live peaceably with our neighbors and avoid gossip and backbiting and spreading unfounded rumors? Do we truly love our neighbors as ourselves?

If we can answer yes to these questions, then we will have on the whole armor of God, which will protect us from harm and preserve us from our enemies. If we must answer no to these questions, then our armor is weak, there is an unshielded place which can be found, a vulnerable area for attack, and we will be subject to injury or destruction by Satan, who will search until he finds our weaknesses, if we have them.

Examine your armor. Is there an unguarded or unprotected place? Determine now to add whatever part is missing. No matter how antiquated or lacking in parts your armor may be, always remember that it is within your power to make the necessary adjustments to complete your armor.

Through the great principle of repentance you can turn your life about and begin now clothing yourself with the armor of God through study, prayer, and a determination to serve God and keep his commandments.” (“Put on the Whole Armour of God,” Ensign, May 1979, 44-46)

As the culmination of this spiritual conflict, the Battle of Armageddon is prophesied to occur in the last days. This battle, fought in the valley of Megiddo, represents a literal confrontation between the forces of good and evil. The Book of Mormon also alludes to this final confrontation, emphasizing that the Lord will appear to save His people amidst the chaos. The outcome of this battle is clear: the faithful will be delivered, and the wicked will face destruction.

Following the Battle of Armageddon, the Church teaches that a period known as the Millennium will ensue, lasting for a thousand years. During this time, Satan will be bound, and peace will reign on Earth. Revelation 20:2-3 states, “And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and bound him a thousand years.” This period is characterized by righteousness, where the faithful will dwell in harmony under the reign of Jesus Christ.

Joseph Fielding Smith said:

There are many among us who teach that the binding of Satan will be merely the binding which those dwelling on the earth will place upon him by their refusal to hear his enticings. This is not so. He will not have the privilege during that period of time to tempt any man. (Church History and Modern Revelation, 1:192)

The teachings of the Church emphasize that the righteousness of the people during the Millennium will play a crucial role in maintaining peace. As noted in 1 Nephi 22:26, “because of the righteousness of [the] people, Satan has no power.” This displays the importance of individual and collective righteousness in thwarting the influence of evil. The faithful are encouraged to cultivate their spiritual lives, engage in service, and strengthen their communities to prepare for this era of peace.

However, the peace of the Millennium will not last indefinitely. At the end of these thousand years, Satan will be loosed for “a little season” to gather those who would rebel against God. This rebellion culminates in another significant conflict known as the Battle of Gog and Magog. Revelation 20:7-9 describes this final confrontation, where Satan gathers the nations for battle against the saints, only to be defeated once again by divine intervention.

The conclusion of the final war is marked by the ultimate defeat of Satan and his followers. Revelation 20:10 proclaims, “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone.” This imagery serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of rebellion against God and the eternal fate awaiting those who choose to follow the adversary.

In stark contrast, the faithful are promised an inheritance of peace and joy. The teachings of the Church emphasize that the meek shall inherit the Earth, free from the influence of evil. This promise serves as a source of hope and motivation for believers, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith and to strive for righteousness in their daily lives.

As believers contemplate the events surrounding the final war, the teachings of the Church explain the importance of preparation. The faithful are encouraged to engage in spiritual practices, strengthen their testimonies, and build communities of support. By doing so, they can better withstand the trials and tribulations that may arise in the last days.

Gramps,

I’ve heard that there will be a whole year of no rainbows (and rain presumably), which is a sign that Christ will return the following year. Where did that come from?

Scott

Answer

Scott,

The rainbow first appears in the Bible in the Book of Genesis, following the great flood that Noah and his family survived. In Genesis 9:13-15, God establishes a covenant with Noah, promising never to destroy the earth by flood again, and the rainbow serves as a sign of this covenant. This is crucial for understanding the significance of rainbows in Latter-day Saint theology. The rainbow is not merely a meteorological phenomenon; it is a divine promise that signifies hope and renewal after destruction.

Joseph Smith, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, received revelations that further elaborated on the significance of rainbows. According to a revelation recorded on March 10, 1844, Smith prophesied that the appearance of a rainbow would indicate a year of prosperity, with seed time and harvest assured. Conversely, he warned that the absence of a rainbow would herald desolation and calamity, suggesting that such a year would not witness the Second Coming of Christ. This revelation displays the belief that rainbows are not only symbols of hope but also indicators of divine favor and impending events in the eschatological timeline.

Joseph Smith said:

“I have asked of the Lord concerning His coming; and while asking the Lord, He gave a sign and said, ‘In the days of Noah I set a bow in the heavens as a sign and token that in any year that the bow should be seen the Lord would not come; but there should be seed time and harvest during that year: but whenever you see the bow withdrawn, it shall be a token that there shall be famine, pestilence, and great distress among the nations, and that the coming of the Messiah is not far distant'” (Joseph Fielding Smith, “Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith,” Section Six 1843-44, p.341).

The belief that there will be no rainbows before the Second Coming is based on the prophetic teachings of Joseph Smith and subsequent leaders of the Church. The absence of rainbows is interpreted as a sign of significant turmoil and distress among nations, as prophesied by Smith. He stated that in the year when the rainbow is not seen, it would mark the beginning of calamities, including famine and widespread suffering. This interpretation aligns with the broader Latter-day Saint understanding of the signs of the times, which includes various natural disasters and societal upheavals leading up to the Second Coming.

In addition to Joseph Smith, other leaders of The Church have echoed similar sentiments regarding the signs of the times. President Joseph Fielding Smith, for instance, spoke of the turmoil and distress that would precede the Second Coming, emphasizing that the elements would become angry, leading to natural disasters and societal chaos. These teachings reinforce the notion that the absence of rainbows is a significant indicator of the spiritual and physical state of the world as it approaches the Second Coming.

While there is some discussion over whether or not the absence of rainbows in the sky is figurative or literal, Bruce R. McConkie seemed to think it was a literal sign of the Second Coming. In his book, The Millennial Messiah, McConkie also affirms the absence of rainbows as a sign of the Second Coming and lists it with other visual events.

“And the signs in heaven above are like nothing man has ever seen. Blood is everywhere; fire and vapors of smoke fill the atmospheric heavens. No man has seen a rainbow this year” (Bruce R. McConkie, “The Millennial Messiah,” Chapter 2: Eternity and the Seven Ages).

Despite the ominous interpretations surrounding the absence of rainbows, it is important to recognize their role as symbols of hope and redemption. In Latter-day Saint theology, rainbows represent the possibility of renewal and the promise of God’s mercy. They serve as reminders that even in times of distress, there is hope for a brighter future. The teachings of the Church emphasize the importance of faith and preparedness in the face of adversity, encouraging members to store provisions and cultivate spiritual resilience.

Furthermore, rainbows are also seen as symbols of the eventual return of Zion. The return of Zion is associated with the establishment of a holy city where righteousness prevails. The appearance of a rainbow is interpreted as a sign that the conditions for the return of Zion are being met, as it symbolizes the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people. This duality of rainbows as both a sign of impending calamity and a symbol of hope reflects the complexity of Latter-day Saint beliefs regarding the end times.

Gramps,

What will happen before God cleanses the earth by fire?

Abby

Answer

Abby,

One of the most comforting aspects of Latter-day Saint doctrine is the belief in resurrection. The righteous who have passed away will be resurrected at the Second Coming. As stated in the Doctrine and Covenants,

But before the arm of the Lord shall fall, an angel shall sound his trump, and the saints that have slept shall come forth to meet me in the cloud” (D&C 45:45).

Joseph Smith said:

When I contemplate the rapidity with which the great and glorious day of the coming of the Son of Man advances, when He shall come to receive His Saints unto Himself, where they shall dwell in His presence, and be crowned with glory and immortality: when I consider that soon the heavens are to be shaken, and the earth tremble and reel to and fro; and that the heavens are to be unfolded as a scroll when it is rolled up; and that every mountain and island are to flee away, I cry out in my heart, What manner of persons ought we to be in all holy conversation and godliness! (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 29.)

This resurrection is not merely a return to life; it is a transformation into a glorified state, free from the pains and sorrows of mortality.

The resurrection of the righteous dead is an event that signifies the triumph of good over evil. It is a moment of reunion, where loved ones are brought together in a state of eternal joy. In the New Testament, Paul writes,

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

Sterling W. Still said:

At Christ’s coming a great number of very exciting things are going to take place. He is not coming alone; as Paul says, he will come with his mighty angels. (See 2 Thes. 1:7-8.) At his coming a great many of the faithful dead will be resurrected and caught up to meet the Lord in the air. And some of the righteous who are then living upon the earth will be changed from mortality to immortality in the twinkling of an eye to join that impressive company in the air. Certainly this is something to look forward to. (Conference Report, April 1966, First Day-Morning Meeting 20.)

The imagery of being “caught up” suggests a divine invitation to ascend to a higher plane of existence, away from the chaos and destruction that will engulf the wicked.

For those who are alive at the time of Christ’s return, the experience will also be transformative. The righteous will be lifted off the Earth to meet the resurrected saints. This event is often referred to as the “rapture” in other Christian traditions, but in Latter-day Saint theology, it is understood as a divine protection for the faithful. President Joseph Fielding Smith emphasized that the fire described in scripture is not merely figurative; it is a literal cleansing that will occur at the Second Coming. (Smith, J. F. (1956). Church History and Modern Revelation Salt Lake City, UT: Deseret Book Company)

The righteous will be shielded from the consuming fire that will destroy the wicked. This protection is not just physical but also spiritual, as the faithful will be prepared to enter into the presence of God. The scriptures describe this state as one of glory and light, where the faithful will dwell in “everlasting burnings” (Isaiah 33:14). This phrase, often misunderstood, refers to the purity and holiness of God’s presence, which is likened to a consuming fire that purifies rather than destroys.

George Q. Cannon minced no words when he said:

O, you adulterers! O, you whoremongers! O, you drunkards! O you Sabbath-breakers! O you dishonest men, and you hypocrites who have a place and a name among the Latter-day Saints! I say, woe! unto you unless you repent of your sins, unless you forsake everything that is evil and humble yourselves before God, and ask forgiveness from Him; for I tell you the Spirit of God will be withdrawn from you, and you will be left to yourselves and become as withered branches only fit for burning, unless you heartily, sincerely, profoundly, from the bottom of your hearts, repent of all your sins and put them far from you. God will not bear with you any longer. The sinner in Zion will tremble. That day will come. Fear will come upon the hypocrite. (Isa. 33:14) Therefore, repent of your sins before it is too late. And if you do you may enter into the holy places which God has provided. (Journal of Discourses, 25:327)

The cleansing fire serves multiple purposes: it is a means of judgment, a tool for purification, and a precursor to the establishment of a new order. The Book of Mormon prophet Moroni warned that “the wicked will he destroy; and he will spare his people, yea, even if it so be that he must destroy the wicked by fire” (2 Nephi 30:10). This duality highlights the justice of God, who will not allow wickedness to persist in His creation.

The concept of purification through fire is not unique to Latter-day Saint theology; it is a common motif in many religious traditions. Fire is often seen as a symbol of transformation, capable of refining and purifying. In the Doctrine and Covenants, it is stated, “For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fuller’s soap; and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver” (D&C 128:24). This imagery suggests that the righteous will undergo a process of refinement, emerging from the fire as pure and holy beings.

The purification process is essential for those who wish to dwell in the presence of God. As President Charles W. Penrose articulated, “the globe on which they passed their probation, having kept the law of its being, will come into remembrance before its Maker.” (Journal of Discourses) This statement emphasizes the belief that the Earth itself will be transformed and glorified, becoming a fit dwelling place for the righteous.

As the Earth is cleansed and renewed, the righteous will play a vital role in the establishment of God’s kingdom. The Book of Mormon teaches that “the Lord will come to reign in his glory” (Mosiah 15:5). This reign will be characterized by peace, righteousness, and the absence of wickedness. The faithful will be called to assist in this divine work, helping to build a society that reflects the values of the kingdom of God.

Gramps,

Elder Hales Conference Talk when he said, “In recent decades, the Church has largely been spared the terrible misunderstandings and persecutions experienced by the early Saints. It will not always be so.” Do you foresee a time of physical persecution and violence against church members coming back into our communities?

Brad

Answer

Brad,

The early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were marked by significant persecution. From the mob violence in Missouri to the expulsion from Illinois, early Saints faced severe trials that tested their faith and resilience. Historical accounts reveal that these persecutions were often fueled by misunderstanding and fear of the unknown. As noted in the writings of B. H. Roberts, the early Saints were often seen as public enemies, facing hostility not just from individuals but from entire communities and governments.

The persecution culminated in the martyrdom of Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith in Carthage Jail, a tragic event that showed the violent opposition faced by the Church. This history serves as a reminder of the potential for societal backlash against those who hold beliefs that diverge from the mainstream.

In recent years, there have been instances of legal and social challenges faced by members of the Church, such as the case of a baker who faced legal repercussions for refusing to create a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. These events have sparked discussions about religious freedom and the rights of individuals to practice their faith without fear of persecution. As noted in a response to a concerned member, the Church has historically encouraged its members to stand firm in their beliefs while also treating others with respect and kindness.

The scriptures provide numerous warnings about the conditions that will precede the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Matthew 24 outlines signs of the last days, including wars, famines, and persecution of the faithful. Similarly, the Doctrine and Covenants speaks of great calamities and the need for the faithful to gather in holy places for protection.

President Ezra Taft Benson emphasized that the rejection of God’s servants would lead to greater calamities, suggesting that the faithful may face increased opposition as the world becomes more wicked. This prophetic framework raises the question: How should members of the Church prepare for potential persecution?

The teachings of modern prophets provide guidance on how members can prepare for the challenges that may arise. President Gordon B. Hinckley encouraged members to build their faith and strengthen their relationship with God and to stand up for something. This spiritual preparation is crucial, as it fosters resilience and hope in the face of adversity.

In addition to spiritual preparation, practical measures such as establishing a food storage supply and financial savings are also recommended. The Church has counseled its members to be wise and not to go to extremes, but to be prepared for adversity. This dual approach—spiritual and practical—can help members navigate the uncertainties of the future.

In times of trial, the strength of community becomes paramount. The early Saints relied on one another for support, and this principle remains relevant today. Building a network of like-minded individuals can provide emotional and spiritual support during challenging times. As members of the Church, fostering relationships with fellow Saints can create a sense of belonging and shared purpose, which is essential in facing potential persecution.

While it is important to strengthen internal community ties, engaging with the broader society is equally vital. The Church encourages its members to practice civility and respect towards others, regardless of differing beliefs. This approach not only fosters understanding but also helps to mitigate hostility towards the Church. As noted in a response to a concerned member, treating others with kindness and respect is a reflection of Christ’s teachings and can help bridge divides.

Question

Gramps,

We often discuss living in the dispensation of the fullness of times, and according to the scriptures, each of the seven seals represents 1,000 years. What still needs to happen before the 7th seal is opened?

Alex

Answer

Alex,

According to Latter-day Saint doctrine, the seven seals correspond to seven thousand years of the earth’s history, with each seal representing a distinct period. The first six seals have already been opened, while the seventh seal is yet to come. Each seal unveils a series of events and conditions that reflect the spiritual and temporal state of humanity during that time. The sixth seal, in particular, is significant as it encompasses the current era, which many believe is drawing to a close.

The Doctrine and Covenants, a key scripture in Latter-day Saint theology, provides insight into the nature of these seals. It states, “For behold, the field is white already to harvest; and it is the eleventh hour, and the last time that I shall call laborers into my vineyard” (Doctrine and Covenants 33:3). This verse suggests that we are in the “eleventh hour” of the sixth seal, indicating that the time for preparation and gathering is limited.

As we examine the current state of the world, many Latter-day Saints see parallels with the prophecies outlined in the Book of Revelation. The sixth seal is characterized by significant upheaval, including natural disasters, wars, and societal turmoil. These events are often interpreted as signs of the times, indicating that the return of Jesus Christ is imminent.

Elder Orson F. Whitney, a prominent leader in the Church, described the sixth seal as a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. He stated, “The time in which we live is compared to the eleventh hour… we who labor in this hour will be rewarded if we are faithful” (Church History and Modern Revelation, 1:153). This perspective emphasizes the importance of being spiritually prepared for the events that will unfold as we approach the opening of the seventh seal.

The transition from the sixth to the seventh seal is marked by significant events described in the Book of Revelation. One of the most notable signs is the silence in heaven for about half an hour (Revelation 8:1). This moment of silence is often interpreted as a precursor to the dramatic events that will follow, including the sounding of the trumpets and the final judgments.

The seventh seal is expected to usher in a period of great tribulation, as well as the second coming of Jesus Christ. The Doctrine and Covenants further elaborates on this, stating that the trumpets will sound after the testimony of the voice of thunderings, lightnings, and tempests (Doctrine and Covenants 88:90-91). These events will culminate in the first resurrection and the final judgment, marking the completion of God’s plan for humanity.

Latter-day Saints believe that modern revelation plays a crucial role in understanding the events of the last days. The teachings of contemporary prophets and apostles provide guidance and insight into the unfolding of these prophetic events. As members of the Church study the scriptures alongside modern revelations, they gain a clearer understanding of their place in the timeline of the last days.

In a previous Q&A, I emphasized the importance of living as though Christ has already come. He advises, “Let us be ready, by living the gospel principles today, so that when the seventh seal does open we are not caught unprepared.” This call to preparedness underscores the urgency of the times and the need for individuals to align their lives with gospel principles.

The signs of the times are a recurring theme in Latter-day Saint teachings. These signs, which include wars, natural disasters, and societal upheaval, serve as indicators of the approaching second coming of Christ. The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants also provide additional insights into these signs, emphasizing the need for vigilance and preparedness.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, has spoken about the importance of recognizing these signs. He stated, “We are not to be afraid of the future, but we are to be prepared for it.” This perspective encourages members of the Church to remain hopeful and proactive in their spiritual lives, even amidst uncertainty.

While it is difficult to predict the exact timeline for the fulfillment of all prophetic signs, Latter-day Saints believe that many of these events are contingent upon human agency and divine timing. In a previous article, I noted that some signs depend on the actions of individuals, while others are determined by God’s schedule. He emphasizes that “ultimately we are on Heavenly Father’s schedule, and he’s the only one that really knows anything about it for sure.”

This understanding fosters a sense of patience and faith among members of the Church, as they navigate the complexities of the last days. Rather than becoming anxious about the future, they are encouraged to focus on their personal spiritual growth and preparation.

Question

Dear Gramps,

Why does God keep the time of the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ a secret? What could be the harm in knowing? How could anybody take advantage of it unfairly? After all, He gave Samuel the Lamanite a fairly good time frame for His first coming. And knowing that didn’t seem to hurt anybody. So why keep the time of the 2nd Coming such a big secret?

Robert

Answer

Robert,

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is not merely a theological concept; it represents the fulfillment of divine promises and the culmination of God’s plan for humanity. According to the scriptures, Jesus will return to the earth in glory, bringing with Him the hope of salvation and the establishment of His kingdom. As stated in the Book of Mormon, “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). This event is anticipated as a time when righteousness will prevail, and the faithful will be rewarded.

The significance of this event is emphasized by the teachings of modern prophets. President Gordon B. Hinckley emphasized that knowing the date of the Second Coming would diminish the self-discipline required to live according to gospel principles. He stated, “To know when these events will occur would take from us much of the self-discipline needed to daily obey the principles of the gospel.” This perspective encourages believers to focus on living righteously rather than fixating on the timing of Christ’s return.

The scriptures provide numerous signs that indicate the approach of the Second Coming. These signs serve as both warnings and encouragements for believers to remain vigilant and prepared. In the New Testament, Jesus spoke of various signs, including wars, natural disasters, and moral decay. For instance, in Matthew 24:6-7, He said, “And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”

In addition to these signs, the Doctrine and Covenants, a collection of revelations given to Joseph Smith, outlines specific events that will precede the Second Coming. For example, D&C 88:95-98 describes a time of silence in heaven followed by the unveiling of the Lord’s face, where the faithful will be caught up to meet Him. These prophetic insights remind believers that while the exact timing of the Second Coming is unknown, the signs are evident and should not be ignored.

Throughout history, God has sent prophets to prepare His people for significant events, including the Second Coming. In modern times, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have provided guidance on how to recognize the signs of the times and prepare spiritually. Elder Dallin H. Oaks has encouraged members to be proactive in their preparation, stating, “While we are powerless to alter the fact of the Second Coming and unable to know its exact time, we can accelerate our own preparation and try to influence the preparation of those around us.”

The teachings of these prophets serve as a beacon of hope and direction, reminding believers to focus on their spiritual growth and readiness. As President Thomas S. Monson once said, “Though the storm clouds may gather, though the rains may pour down upon us, our knowledge of the gospel and our love of our Heavenly Father and of our Savior will comfort and sustain us.” This assurance encourages believers to remain steadfast in their faith, regardless of the challenges they may face.

Preparation for the Second Coming involves both spiritual and practical steps. The first step is to cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, scripture study, and participation in church activities. Engaging in these practices helps individuals to strengthen their faith and become more attuned to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Additionally, believers are encouraged to live righteously and serve others. The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 illustrates the importance of being prepared. Five of the virgins were wise and brought extra oil for their lamps, while the other five were foolish and unprepared. When the bridegroom arrived, only those who were ready were able to enter the wedding feast. This parable serves as a reminder that spiritual readiness is essential for meeting the Savior when He returns.

Moreover, believers should strive to be aware of the signs of the times and the events unfolding in the world. Understanding these signs can help individuals recognize the importance of their spiritual preparation. As Elder Neil L. Andersen stated, “The Lord has set His hand to prepare the world for His glorious return. These are days of great opportunity and important responsibilities.” By being informed and proactive, believers can navigate the challenges of the last days with faith and confidence.

Gramps,

What calamities and disasters will we have to face in the last days?

Pam

Answer

Pam,

In a world increasingly marked by natural disasters, social unrest, and global pandemics, many individuals are left wondering: are these calamities the signs foretold by ancient and modern prophets? The question is particularly poignant for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who have been taught to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the associated tribulations.

The Family Proclamation, issued by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1995, warns of the disintegration of the family and its consequences. It states, “The disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.” This proclamation serves as a modern-day warning, echoing the sentiments found in scriptural texts that speak of wars, famines, pestilences, and natural disasters as signs of the last days.

In the New Testament, Jesus prophesied that “nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences” (Luke 21:10-11). Many have interpreted these prophecies as indicators of the tumultuous times preceding the Second Coming. However, the interpretation of these calamities is often vague and symbolic, leading to various interpretations among believers.

The calamities mentioned in prophetic texts can manifest in numerous ways, including natural disasters, social upheaval, and personal crises. For instance, Tad R. Callister, an emeritus General Authority Seventy, has linked various social ills and disasters to a failure to uphold family values, suggesting that these issues are symptoms of a broader societal decline. This perspective emphasizes the interconnectedness of individual actions and societal outcomes, suggesting that the moral fabric of society plays a crucial role in calamities.

Moreover, the Church has generally refrained from attributing specific disasters to divine judgment, instead encouraging members to focus on personal preparedness and spiritual resilience. This approach aligns with the teachings of modern prophets, who emphasize the importance of living righteously and being prepared for any eventuality.

In recent years, the world has witnessed a series of unprecedented events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, and civil unrest. These occurrences have led many to question whether they are indeed the calamities foretold in scripture. The pandemic, for instance, has been described as a “desolating scourge” that has affected millions globally, prompting discussions about its potential prophetic significance.

While some may view these events as signs of the impending Second Coming, it is essential to approach such interpretations with caution. The scriptures indicate that “the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night” (2 Peter 3:10), suggesting that the timing and nature of these events may not be as clear-cut as some might hope. The ambiguity surrounding these calamities serves as a reminder of the need for spiritual preparedness and resilience in the face of uncertainty.

The Church has consistently emphasized the importance of personal preparedness. This includes not only physical preparedness, such as food storage and emergency supplies, but also spiritual readiness. As Elder James J. Hamula stated, “There is no more essential preparation for the great day of the Lord than heeding [the Savior’s] call to repent and be sanctified.” This call to action underscores the need for individuals to cultivate a strong spiritual foundation, enabling them to navigate the challenges that may arise.

The Church’s emphasis on preparedness is not merely a response to current events but a long-standing principle rooted in scripture. Members are encouraged to establish a culture of preparedness, ensuring that they are equipped to face both temporal and spiritual challenges. This proactive approach can help alleviate fear and anxiety, allowing individuals to focus on serving others and building a strong community.

While the signs may be present, the interpretation of these events is often subjective and influenced by individual beliefs and experiences.

Question

Gramps,

Will the sacrament at Adam-omdi-Ahman happen years before Christ comes and everyone sees Him? Does the Book of Mormon point to when this will take place?

Konnie

Answer

Konnie,

Adam-ondi-Ahman is deeply embedded in Latter-day Saint scripture and prophecy. According to the Doctrine and Covenants, a key scripture in the LDS canon, this valley is the same place where Adam, the first man, assembled the faithful of his posterity three years before his death and bestowed blessings upon them. This historical event sets the stage for its future role in divine councils. Joseph Smith, the founding prophet of the LDS Church, emphasized the valley’s enduring significance, stating that it will once again be the gathering place for the “worthies who have held keys of the dispensations.” Here, Adam will report on his stewardship, and Jesus Christ will be inaugurated as the “King of kings,” asserting His rightful dominion over the earth.

The importance of Adam-ondi-Ahman is further explained by Charles W. Penrose, who, in 1859, articulated a vision of the Lord’s appearance in the valley, unseen by the broader world. This event is anticipated to be a cornerstone in the establishment of Zion and the solidification of Christ’s kingdom.

A central question within LDS eschatology is the sequence of events leading up to the Second Coming of Christ. Specifically, the timing of the sacrament at Adam-ondi-Ahman in relation to Christ’s visible return is of paramount interest. The sacrament, a sacred ordinance in the LDS faith, symbolizes purification and renewal, preparing the faithful for divine encounters.

Prophetic insights suggest that the sacrament at Adam-ondi-Ahman is a precursor to the Second Coming. As stated, the valley will host a grand council where authority is transferred from Lucifer to Jesus Christ, marking a definitive shift in earthly governance. This transfer involves the culmination of judgments and reports from those who have held divine keys, orchestrated by Adam under Christ’s direction. The sacrament serves as both a spiritual preparation and a symbolic act of surrender to Christ’s ultimate authority.

Given this framework, it is believed that the sacrament event at Adam-ondi-Ahman will occur before Christ’s universal and visible return. This sequence points to the sacrament’s role in setting the spiritual and administrative foundations necessary for Christ’s reign. The sacrament is thus not merely a ritual but a pivotal moment that paves the way for the Second Coming, ensuring that the Church is in a state of readiness and unity.

The anticipated assemblage at Adam-ondi-Ahman is envisioned as a gathering of all who have “overcome the world through Christ,” encompassing a vast number of faithful adherents. This congregation is expected to be as visible in the skies as it is present on the valley’s grounds, symbolizing the unity and magnitude of the faithful.

The gathering serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it acts as a testament to the enduring faith and perseverance of the saints throughout the ages. Secondly, it provides a setting for Christ to reaffirm His covenant with His followers, reinforcing the principles of Zion and the eternal nature of His kingdom. Thirdly, it ensures a synchronized transition of authority, preventing chaos and establishing order as Lucifer’s influence is fully renounced.

The sacrament at this gathering is more than a ceremonial act; it is a declaration of faith and a binding agreement to uphold the values and commandments that underpin the LDS doctrine. By partaking in the sacrament, attendees affirm their commitment to follow Christ and support the establishment of His everlasting dominion.

The preparatory steps leading up to the sacrament at Adam-ondi-Ahman are critical for both individual and collective readiness. On a personal level, members are encouraged to engage in self-reflection, repentance, and consecration, aligning their lives with the teachings of Jesus Christ. This spiritual purification is essential for worthy participation in the sacrament, ensuring that individuals are spiritually attuned to receive divine instruction and blessings.

Collectively, the Church emphasizes the importance of unity and order in anticipation of the sacrament. Leadership within the Church plays a pivotal role in organizing and guiding members towards this monumental event. Training, education, and spiritual counseling are provided to prepare the faithful for the responsibilities and privileges associated with the sacrament.

The temporal aspect involves ensuring that Adam-ondi-Ahman is ready to host such a significant gathering. This preparedness includes both physical considerations, such as logistics and infrastructure, and environmental factors, ensuring that the valley can accommodate the anticipated influx of attendees. While specifics remain largely divine knowledge, the Church has encouraged its members to maintain faith and obedience, trusting in divine guidance for the fulfillment of these prophesied events.

The sacrament at Adam-ondi-Ahman holds profound theological implications for the LDS faith. It represents the culmination of divine planning, the fulfillment of prophetic promises, and the manifestation of Christ’s eternal kingship. For believers, this event is a beacon of hope, illustrating the ultimate triumph of good over evil and the establishment of a just and righteous world under Christ’s rule.

Moreover, the sacrament at Adam-ondi-Ahman serves as a unifying event for the global Church, transcending geographical, cultural, and temporal boundaries. It reinforces the Church’s teachings on agency, repentance, and eternal progression, providing a clear path toward spiritual and communal salvation.

For the individual member, the anticipation of this sacrament fosters a deeper commitment to personal faith and discipleship. It shows the importance of living a Christ-centered life, preparing oneself for moments of divine encounter and eternal significance.

Gramps,

In the Final Judgment where all are brought to stand before the judgment bar of Jesus Christ, is God the Father present?

Laurie

Answer

Laurie,

The concept of the Final Judgment is a pivotal doctrine within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It encapsulates the moment when every individual will be held accountable for their actions, choices, and faith during their earthly lives.

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe life is a test designed by our Heavenly Father. The Final Judgment is the culmination of this test, where we will be evaluated by divine authorities. The anticipation of this event challenges us to reflect on our lives and the choices we make daily. By understanding who will judge us and the basis for this judgment, we are encouraged to align our lives with the teachings of Jesus Christ and strive for eternal salvation.

He possesses an intimate understanding of our struggles, having experienced mortality firsthand. This understanding enables Him to judge with perfect justice and mercy. Doctrine and Covenants 45:3-5 emphasizes this role, stating that Christ acts as the “advocate with the Father,” interceding on behalf of those who have followed His teachings and embraced His atonement. This advocacy is crucial; it highlights the compassion and love that Jesus has for every individual, offering hope even in the face of accountability.

Alongside His role as Judge, Jesus Christ serves as our Advocate before Heavenly Father. He pleads for those who have sincerely repented and sought to live according to His teachings. This advocacy reflects the mercy of Christ, who desires that all His children return to Him. Through His Atonement, He provides a path for redemption, allowing individuals to overcome their shortcomings and be judged favorably based on their efforts to follow Him and repent of their sins.

While Jesus Christ performs the vital roles of Judge and Advocate, it is ultimately Heavenly Father who holds supreme authority in the judgment process. This divine hierarchy is essential to understanding the nature of judgment in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The judgment process can be likened to a courtroom, where divine laws are applied fairly and justly. Heavenly Father ensures that all actions and choices are accounted for in accordance with His eternal laws. This aspect of judgment emphasizes the importance of accountability and the consequences of our earthly decisions. The role of Heavenly Father as the ultimate authority ensures that justice is served, while also providing a framework for mercy through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

The Final Judgment is based on three primary records that reflect our earthly lives: the Book of Life, earthly records, and internal records.

The Book of Life is a heavenly record that contains the names of those who will inherit eternal life. Revelation 20:12 states that the dead will be judged according to what is written in this book. This record serves as a testament to those who have accepted the gospel and lived according to its principles. It emphasizes the importance of faithfulness and the desire to follow Christ.

Earthly records encompass everything documented during a person’s life, including actions, choices, and behaviors. According to Joseph Smith, these records are crucial for understanding an individual’s faithfulness and character. They provide a comprehensive view of a person’s life, accounting for both good and bad deeds. This aspect of judgment reinforces the idea that every choice carries weight and significance in the grand scheme of eternity.

Each individual’s body holds an internal record of their thoughts, actions, and intentions. Romans 2:15 mentions the law written in our hearts, indicating that our very beings testify to our choices. This internal record is significant because it reflects the true nature of a person, beyond just their actions. It highlights the importance of intent and the condition of the heart in determining one’s eternal destiny.

The Final Judgment will take place after the Millennium, marking the end of a significant period in the eternal plan of salvation. This event will determine the eternal destinies of all individuals based on their faithfulness and adherence to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Those who have faithfully followed the teachings of Christ repented of their sins and sought to live righteously will be rewarded with exaltation in the celestial kingdom. This kingdom represents the highest degree of glory and the opportunity to dwell in the presence of God and Jesus Christ for eternity. Conversely, those who have rejected His teachings and chosen to live contrary to God’s commandments will face consequences appropriate to their choices, which could include being assigned to lower kingdoms of glory.

Agency, or the ability to choose, plays a critical role in the judgment process. As children of God, each individual is accountable for their decisions. The Final Judgment serves as a moment of divine justice, where the choices made throughout life are evaluated. This doctrine emphasizes that while we all have the potential for redemption through Christ’s Atonement, our choices ultimately influence our eternal destinies.

The Final Judgment is a sacred event where Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ preside over the lives of individuals, assessing them based on divine laws and the records kept in heaven and on earth. This doctrine emphasizes accountability, justice, and mercy—reminding us of the importance of faith and works in determining our eternal destinies.

As we reflect on the teachings surrounding the Final Judgment, we are encouraged to live righteously, embrace the gospel, and accept the Atonement of Jesus Christ. May we strive to be faithful in our actions and choices, preparing ourselves to stand before Him with confidence on that great day.

Question

Gramps,

Elder Bruce R. McConkie stated that atomic holocausts surely must come. What does the Book of Mormon have to say about that? What has to happen before the earth is “cleansed”?

Andrew

Answer

Andrew,

In a world increasingly fraught with turmoil and uncertainty, the prophecies of Elder Bruce R. McConkie regarding atomic holocausts serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges that lie ahead. He asserted that such catastrophic events “surely must come” as part of the prophesied turmoil in the last days.

The future of humanity is often depicted through various lenses—scientific, philosophical, and spiritual. For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Church’s teachings provide a framework for understanding the prophetic warnings surrounding the last days. Elder McConkie’s assertions regarding atomic destruction resonate deeply with the Book of Mormon’s emphasis on cleansing through divine intervention. So what does that mean for us today?

Elder Bruce R. McConkie’s reflections on atomic holocausts are poignantly captured in his writings, where he underscores the catastrophic potential of modern warfare and its relationship to biblical prophecy. He stated, “The time will come when the earth will be cleansed by fire, and the wicked will be burned as stubble” (Doctrine of the Kingdom, p. 375). This assertion aligns with several passages in the Book of Mormon, which prophesy various forms of destruction as a consequence of wickedness.

In Mormon 9:4, Moroni warns,

Ye would be more miserable to dwell with a holy and just God, under a consciousness of your filthiness before him, than ye would to dwell with the damned souls in hell.

This suggests that the presence of God is purifying and that those unprepared for such a presence will face dire consequences.

Furthermore, 1 Nephi 22:15 prophesies a time when “all the proud and they who do wickedly shall be as stubble,” indicating that the last days will indeed witness the consequences of moral decay. The imagery of destruction is not simply a warning; it serves as a call to repentance and a reminder of the need for righteousness.

The Book of Mormon is replete with narratives and teachings emphasizing the need for cleansing and redemption. Significant passages illustrate the consequences of wickedness and the ultimate necessity for divine intervention.

In Ether 4:9, it is stated,

At my command… the earth shall shake; and at my command the inhabitants thereof shall pass away, even so as by fire.

This verse indicates that destruction is part of a divine plan, highlighting selective destruction rather than total annihilation. It reinforces the belief that while destruction may come, those who remain faithful will be preserved.

The theme of purification reappears in Alma 9-16, where cities are destroyed due to the wickedness of their inhabitants. This narrative serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and the need to seek His guidance.

Central to the teachings of the Book of Mormon is the balance of divine justice and mercy. While destruction will come as a consequence of wickedness, God’s mercy ensures that the righteous will be preserved. In 2 Nephi 6:14, we read,

And there shall be none to deliver them, but the Lord God of Israel shall be the one to deliver his people.

This passage emphasizes the Church’s belief in a loving God who, even amidst destruction, provides a way for the faithful to be saved.

Hugh Nibley, in his writings, commented on the relevance of the Book of Mormon to contemporary issues, noting,

“The Book of Mormon speaks of the great overburn, not the final destruction of the earth by fire, but a great man-made holocaust from which some shall be saved to make a better world” (Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Vol. 6).

This perspective encourages believers to view the prophesied destruction not just as an end, but as a precursor to renewal and redemption.

The teachings of Elder McConkie and the Book of Mormon collectively point to the significance of preparation for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Latter-day Saints believe that these events serve as a precursor to Christ’s return, where righteousness will ultimately prevail. As stated in Doctrine and Covenants 87:6,

And thus, saith the Lord: I will pour out my fury upon the inhabitants of the earth, and I will send forth my angels to gather my elect from the four quarters of the earth.

This prophetic warning highlights the urgency for individuals and nations to turn away from wickedness and seek the path of righteousness. As the scriptures affirm, “For behold, the sword of vengeance hangeth over you; and the time soon cometh that he avengeth the blood of the saints upon you” (Mormon 8:41), urging all to seek righteousness in a world fraught with peril.

Elder McConkie’s insights and the teachings found in the Book of Mormon converge on the critical theme of cleansing, highlighting the urgency for individuals and nations to turn away from wickedness and seek the path of righteousness in anticipation of the Lord’s return. The prophetic warnings of destruction serve not only as a cautionary tale but also as an invitation to repentance and a deeper relationship with God.

As we navigate the complexities of our modern world, may we heed these teachings and strive to live lives that reflect our commitment to righteousness, compassion, and faith. In doing so, we can find hope amidst uncertainty and prepare ourselves for the blessings that await those who are faithful.
