In reply to Dusty Jansen. The only known reason, yes. But that doesn't mean the only reason. And, more importantly, the idea that it is contradictory is exactly why the angel with the sword would have been necessary even after sealings had already occurred. I don't see the problem.

From what I gather, without presumptions, “The only known purpose for polygamy is to build up seed unto the Lord.” Then Joseph Smith purposely sealing himself to married women in order to avoid having a physical relationship with them seems to be contradictory.

I am descended from one of Edward Partridge’s daughters who both married Joseph as plural wives. There is actual diary entries from one sister detailing a variety of things including Emma’s knowledge and involvement in the matter. Giving her consent and later rescinding it. It must have been difficult for her. That is one situation that is documented first/second hand (depending on which sister you mean) involving plural wives of Joseph’s. My ancestor later re-married Amasa Lyman of the 12 and it was through this second marriage that my family comes.
