Question

Gramps,

I have been invited to a group that plays BUNCO once a month. As it is explained to me everyone invited must commit to going once a month and bring $10 to donate for prizes. I heard the church has an opinion on this but can’t find it anywhere. What do you think?

Luana

Answer

Luana,

By reading up on what Bunco is, it is a ‘game of chance’ or gambling (according to Wikipedia). I have never played the game myself, so I cannot comment on the actual game play.

In my mind, if any game was like poker (a game based on a skill of deception and ‘raising the stakes’), I would not recommend such activity.

The only problem I see is that you must donate $10 to cover prizes. This makes it feel more like gambling since you do have your own money at stake.
