Question

Hi Gramps,

One of my coworkers has been asking me questions about the Mormon Church lately, but he can’t get past the idea that the Mormon Church is not a cult. How can I explain this to him?

Leslie

Answer

Dear Leslie,

What is a cult? From Webster’s 10th Intercollegiate Dictionary—

1. a formal religious veneration: worship

2. a system of religious beliefs and ritual

3. a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious

Your coworker is probably referring to the third definition. In that regard, the Mormon religion certainly is unorthodox, as viewed by the members of the Council of Churches, for instance, who will not even accept the Mormon religion as Christian. Perhaps you could review with him the concept that it is an enviable distinction to be different if one is right.
