Dear Gramps,

What does the scripture mean that says in D&C 49:20,

But it is not given that one man should possess that which is above another, wherefore the world lieth in sin.

It would appear here that the Lord despises economic inequality.

Curtis

Dear Curtis,

In the last analysis, if one person has more than he needs and his neighbor has less, it would be appropriate that the richer help the poorer, but it must be done out of the kindness of the heart rather then by legislation. If each of us had as much concern for others as we have for ourselves, essentially all of our social problems would be solved. Selfishness and self interest lie at the foot of much of our social ills. Therefore, the world lieth in sin.
