Question
Gramps,
To become Gods and Goddesses in the post-mortal existence, will we have to suffer the same pain Jesus did to suffer for our sins? Perhaps this is just because I am mortal, but the prospect of that scares me like I’m a child again. I know I’ve asked you lots of questions… But I like asking questions.
Kyle
Answer
Hello Kyle,
Please continue to ask questions. We all learn and progress in truth and righteousness through proper questions, answers, and the proper application of these answers.
In answer to your question the scripture that enters into my mind and heart is found in D&C 19:16.
“For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent.” (emphasis added)
Following this in vs 17-19 we are further instructed regarding the individuals who will suffer and it is them who have not repented, or individuals who have not accepted the grace of our Savior.
17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I;
18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—
19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.
In light of these verses, the scriptures are pretty clear, that those who have lived a life worthy of exaltation will not suffer for their sins when our Savior already suffered for them.
