In Genesis 22, we find the story of Abraham being commanded to sacrifice Isaac. Why is Isaac called Abraham’s “only son” when he had an older half-brother, Ishmael (via Sarah’s maid, Hagar)?

The Septuagint suggests another reading of the phrase “only begotten son” as “the beloved son”. This reading fits with the various other places in the Old Testament where the phrase turns up.
