Question

Gramps,

Does Luke 9:62 have reference to Lots wife looking back? She went back into the city and went back to her old ways. So if we look back on our old ways or go back to our old ways we lose sight of God.

Thanks,

Daren

Answer

Daren,

Luke 17
has a more direct reference to Lot’s wife than Luke 9. That being said, the story of Lot’s wife can be used as a companion to the Savior’s call of discipleship. When Jesus extends the call of “come, follow me,” He wants us aware of the hardship ahead (vs 57-58), and He wants our whole focus (vs 59-62). Unfortunately, when Lot’s family was called to leave Sodom, his wife looked back longingly at the life she was leaving behind (Genesis 19:17-26). Her feet were obedient, but her heart and her gaze remained behind her. She had nostalgia for her life in the sinful city instead of remorse.
