Gramps,
My daughter is a Stake Primary President and is giving a lesson on the story of David and Goliath. She wants David to be between 8-11 years old when he slew Goliath. I can’t find any age in the scriptures. Any ideas??
Dan, from Layton, Utah

Dear Dan,
This may not be very encouraging, but the best that we can come up with is that David was born in 1085 BC and the war with the Phillistines, in which David was victorious, was begun in the year 1043 BC, which would have made David 42 years old at the time. But the encounter of David and the Goliath could have occurred before the war actually started.
By the way, we read in 1 Sam 17:4—

And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

That would have made Goliath nine feet, six inches tall–a veritable giant.
