Question

Hi Gramps,

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions. I know that we will not be alone in the next world if we stay faithful and keep our covenants. We are told a companion will be provided. I think this is a great part of the gospel, but my question is how. If temple work must be done here, and we just meet our companion there (maybe they even lived on the earth hundreds of years ago) how do our family members still on the earth know to seal us together? Do we have to wait for the Millennium and seal ourselves? Thanks again for your time.

Heather

Answer

Dear Heather,

It’s true that you will may have to wait for the Millennium to be sealed to a companion, but you will not be sealing yourself to your companion at that time in the Millennium.

For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors (Alma 34:32).

All the saving ordinances of the gospel are designed to be complied with in mortality. Provision has been made, however, for those who have passed from mortality without having the opportunity to perform all the saving ordinances and comply with the sacred covenants associated therewith to have those ordinances performed vicariously in their behalf by mortal proxies. This is one of the great purposes of the Millennium. Paul referred to this concept in his statement recorded in 1 Corinthians 15:29

Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Thus, a strain of mortals will live through the Millennium able to enter the holy temples and act as proxies for those who have passed on. As referred to in D&C 101:30-31,

In that day an infant shall not die until he is old; and his life shall be as the age of a tree;

And when he dies he shall not sleep, that is to say in the earth, but shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and shall be caught up, and his rest shall be glorious.

Those who have passed on who are worthy to comply with the principals of the gospel and who have received and accepted those principals in the spirit world will be resurrected in the first resurrection and will live on the earth as immortal beings in company of the mortal strain that will propagate itself for the thousand year period. Mortals and immortals will associate together. So you, as an immortal at that time, will be able to make your wishes known to those who will represent you in the holy temple and complete all the necessary ordinance work in your behalf that will be required for you to receive all the blessings of the gospel that, through your worthiness, you will be permitted to accept.
