Question

Dear Gramps,

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church,,,right?. Well what about the other churches in this world? I have a Christian friend who goes through tests and trials also and is a good person. Well if these churches are so wrong, why is it they face persecution as well? Why do they claim to have the Holy Ghost with them? I am a bit confused. I hope you can help me on this.  Thank you.

Andy

Answer

Dear Andy,

Your statement is correct, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only Church that has the whole truth, but we must recognize the good in other Churches, especially their members.  Many great works have been accomplished by members of other faiths as well as other Church organizations.

We should never say that they are “so wrong” or “bad” as most all strive to better mankind.  President Hinckley counseled us to look for the good in everyone and in all religions.  The LDS church works closely with other churches and organizations in helping those who are in need through various humanitarian projects.  The Church joined forces with several religious groups, including the Catholic Church in campaigning against the same sex marriage amendment in California.

While there is good in other religions, they do not have the whole truth.  They do not have the Priesthood of God nor the authority necessary to administer the life saving ordinances of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  There are several important doctrines and practices given by Jesus Christ during His ministry that other Churches have lost or changed.  Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians prophesied that there would be an apostasy by the Church prior to the second coming of the Lord.  In 2 Thessalonians the 2nd chapter Paul states:

3 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first…”

Because of this apostasy it was necessary for the Lord to restore the Gospel and the Priesthood authority through the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Everyone is entitled to the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.  Many great discoveries have been made through the influence of the Holy Ghost, one being the discovery of the American continent by Columbus.  Only those who have received the gift of the Holy Ghost by one who has the authority to administer this ordinance have the opportunity of having the Holy Ghost as their constant companion if they live worthily.
