Bruce R. McConkie, in his last address prior to his death, bore testimony that Jesus re-experienced the agonies of the Garden of Gethsemane while on the cross. I don’t recall ever reading that in the scriptures or hearing that from any other apostle or prophet. Have others also expressed this thought?

Cathlyn,

Garden of Gethsemane mormonLatter-day Saint theology has long affirmed that the atonement was wrought primarily in the Garden of Gethsemane, with the crucifixion an agonizing dénouement to the act of atonement. In his final General Conference address days before he died, Brother McConkie did indeed express the view that “while [Jesus] was hanging on the cross…all the infinite agonies and merciless pains of Gethsemane recurred.” So far as I can tell, Elder McConkie’s teachings on this matter have not been repeated or amplified by other apostles or acknowledged by the First Presidency in any official manner.
