Question

Dear Gramps,

I have a good question about space. Will there be space travel during the millennium- specifically to Mars?

Answer

Liam,

Based on the focus of the information and principles revealed to the Church, you will have trouble finding a direct or revealed answer to that question .  This is generally not a topic or principle that is immediately pertinent to the establishment of Zion, or the building up of God’s Kingdom on earth. However, we can better understand why we don’t know much about this if we take into consideration what the Lord revealed unto Moses:

But only an account of this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, give I unto you. For behold, there are many worlds that have passed away by the word of my power. And there are many that now stand, and innumerable are they unto man; but all things are numbered unto me, for they are mine and I know them. (Moses 1:35)

As you can see, the Lord has created works that are innumerable to us, Mars included!  However, the Lord informed Moses that he would only be granting him information as it pertains to this earth.  I believe that from a gospel standpoint, that is where He wants our focus; this earth and our brothers and sisters here.  He also blessed Moses with the opportunity to behold every particle of the earth:

And it came to pass, as the voice was still speaking, Moses cast his eyes and beheld the earth, yea, even all of it; and there was not a particle of it which he did not behold, discerning it by the Spirit of God. (Moses 1:27)

What an amazing experience that must have been!  I hope that during the millennium many of us, according to the will of the Lord, will be blessed with this level of knowledge.  Individuals and earthly organizations are free, and will continue to be free during the millennium, to pursue space travel and other interests.  With that in mind, those who are currently exploring these possibilities will be able to continue to do so.

The day will eventually come when the Lord will bless us with additional knowledge and opportunity pertaining to our solar system and the universe that He has created.   Given what the Lord has revealed thus far, I would suggest there may yet be more for us to learn from our own planet than from others in our solar system; especially as it pertains to the gospel and our salvation.
