Question

Hi Gramps,

I have tried searching in here for this topic but it does not yet seem to be covered. I am an avid basketball player and really enjoy my sport, but came to think today of how I am to wear a temple garment while I play without it showing as all basketball uniforms are singlets. I know there are professional Mormon basket ballers in the NBA. Do they take them off for the game, or are there none that have yet been endowed? Any help would be great.

Answer

Benjamin,

Steve Young was an active football player for many years, and he explained in an  interview on television that during the game, he took the garments off out of respect for them. He felt the aggressive sweaty nature of the game precluded wearing the garment. Keep in mind, he would have been able to keep them covered the entire time had he chosen to wear them.

This is an example of a possible time when it is appropriate to not wear the garment. At the same time, I see professional basketball players wearing t-shirts under their uniforms during games, so there are ways to cover them should you choose to wear them. This is a personal decision best made prayerfully and with discussions with your bishop. Follow the guide of the Holy Ghost, and you will be right every time.
