Dear Gramps,

Was the priesthood held by Enoch son of Cain? If Enoch was the son of Cain, how could of he held the Priestood, I’m asuming he was the Enoch of the city of Enoch.

Elliot

Dear Elliot,

There are two different men named Enoch mentioned in the book of Genesis.  The first is Enoch the son of Cain.  In Genesis 4: 17, we are told that Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch:  “17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.”  Enoch, Cain’s son, was the father of Irad.  It was Irad that Lamech murdered for the “oath’s sake”.   Because Enoch was the son of Cain, he would not have held the Priesthood.

The second Enoch was a descendant of Adam through his son Seth.  He was the son of Jared, and according to the Bible Dictionary was the seventh (generation) from Adam.  Enoch was the father of Methuselah.  Very little is mentioned in the Bible concerning Enoch.  In Genesis 4: 23-24 we are told:  “23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:  24 And Enoch walked with God and he was not; for God took him.”

It is in the Pearl of Great Price that we learn how great of a prophet Enoch was.  He found favor in the sight of the Lord and was commanded to preach repentance to the people.
