Dear Gramps,

When a baby is blessed, is it appropriate to ask the Lord for blessings for the baby or is it appropriate to address the baby and pronounce blessing on the baby? I have heard it done both ways and wonder if one way is correct or if both ways, though different in form, are appropriate.

Sheryl, from Utah

Dear Sheryl,

We often hear fathers, when blessings their babies. directing their words directly to the infant. Of course the baby does not understand what is being said to it. My understanding is that the proper procedure when blessings babies is to address our Father in Heaven directly, and the baby in the third person. As inspired by the Spirit, specific blessings may be authoritatively pronounced upon “him” or “her,” rather than upon “you.”
