Gramps,

Why could Mary Magdeline NOT touch Christ at the tomb? My husband’s priesthood quorum got way off track last week and he asked me (he figures because I teach Gospel Essentials and sometimes Gospel Doctrine I should know, but..) well, I’m hoping you do?

Thanks.

Nancy

Dear Nancy,

People may speculate forever on things that have not been revealed. All we know is that when Mary met Jesus at the tomb following his resurrection, he said to her “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father” (John 20:17). The reason Mary was not to touch Jesus was because he had not yet ascended to his Father. The word “for” in the scripture means the same as “because.” But all that is obvious. I guess the question is “Why could not Mary touch Jesus just because he had not yet ascended to the Father?” That is the question on which we have no revealed word.
