Question
Dear Gramps,
I am 15 and have Aspergers.
1. Will there be sports in the Millennium? You see, I like sports a lot and would like to participate in sports such as baseball and possibly a cycling race. Maybe Ping Pong too, but anyway, my mom said that Brigham Young said to enjoy yourself with sports, so we’re assuming there will be sports in the Millennium. But I’m unsure.
2. Will there be Disney movies in the Millennium? I like Disney movies very much.
Thank you.
Liam
Answer
Dear Liam,
As you know, there is much we don’t know about the Millennium, but we can make some guesses based on what we do know. What I do know is that Joseph Smith would likely agree with you. He loved sports like pulling sticks, wrestling etc. I also know that the Church encourages sport programs. Every LDS church I have ever been in has a basketball court (along with a stage for cultural events.) I think we can rest assured that the Lord sees value in this aspect of our lives. I can see no reason that sports would not be a part of the Millennium.
Disney movies are a bit trickier. I can’t say for sure, no one can, but here is something to consider. The 13th Article of Faith says in part:
” . . . If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.”
As long as Disney movie fit this description, then I believe they could be a part of the Millennium. Not just for our viewing pleasure, but for the pleasure that others have in creating them. Remember earlier when I said every church building I know of has a stage? Over the years, the Church has always encouraged cultural events…plays, road shows (ask your mom about these), dances, dance performances. We are a culture that values uplifting entertainment.
Remember that Nephi taught: ” . . . men are, that they might have joy.” 2 Nephi 2:25. The Lord wants us to be happy. That happiness comes from loving and serving one another, of course, but also from good wholesome entertainment like sports and cultural events, perhaps Disney movies too!
Good luck in your next game!
