Question
Gramps,
Thank you for your website. It’s always an informing and enjoyable read! We have a sister in our ward who maintains that families are physically separated from each other in the spirit world (currently, not after judgment day) until their temple work is completed. She bases this off of a vision/dream she had – not an infrequent thing for her – and I want to find a more authoritative source to confirm or refute this. Do you know of any? Thanks.
Elizabeth
Answer
Elizabeth,
I was able to do a little research and was able to find a quote which confirms an aspect of her dream but not in totality. The first quote is given to us by President Jedediah M. Grant who mentioned that some families will not be permitted to come and dwell together because they did not honor their calling here, read below:
“Family relationships are also important. President Jedediah M. Grant, a counselor to Brigham Young, saw the spirit world and described to Heber C. Kimball the organization that exists there: “He said that the people he there saw were organized in family capacities. … He said, ‘When I looked at families, there was a deficiency in some, … for I saw families that would not be permitted to come and dwell together, because they had not honored their calling here’” (Deseret News, Dec. 10, 1856, 316–17).”
I, was not able to find any information confirming that temple work must be completed before they could come together. The quote provided leans toward both types of members (those who have received temple ordinances and those who have not) who did not honor their calling here in this life. In light of this quote both types would not be permitted to come and dwell with their family also.
As to the reason why a family would be permitted, or when they would be permitted, is unknown, at least I was unable to find any quote to confirm this lady. She may or may not be correct.
