Question
Gramps,
I hope someone actually reads these. I’m exhausted from trying to save myself. My son Jesse lost his life to suicide four months ago. Could you recommend a self help book for me? I live in a town with counseling for drug abusers but there is no support groups or help of any kind for me here. I live alone in my home and I need help. Maybe a book will help.

Answer
Sherry,
Let me express my sorrow for your situation. I pray that Heavenly Father continues to hold you up in this most difficult time.
Elder M. Russell Ballard, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, wrote a book titled “Suicide: Some Things We Know, And Some We Do Not.” It is available online at Deseret Book’s website.
I would also echo the comfort Elder Ballard shares,
“As I think about the worry and agony of those whose loved one has taken his or her own life, I find deep comfort and faith in the Lord’s promise and blessing to us who remain in mortality: ‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.'” (John 14:27)
Reach out to the priesthood around you for blessings and support, and keep in close contact with your bishop and home/visiting teachers. You’ll find many around you willing to help however you need. There is no need to feel isolated at this time. I know for certain that Heavenly Father loves you and wants to help you through this. Reach out to him in faith, and he will help heal your pain.
