Hi Gramps,

We are born into life and we take on the appearance and the traits of our parents and ancestors. We are all brothers and sisters, but how much of our original spiritual character survives through all the genetic and environmental influences from birth to maturity? How much of our spiritual self actually survives with us into this life? Are there traces of our pre-existent character in our earthly character? Are our unexplained talents a testimony of the legacy of our spiritual existence?

Looking forward to your thoughts,

D.J from Australia

Dear DJ,

Have you ever watched a child grow up? From little infant to toddler to teenager and beyond.

mormon-familiesI have and I have noticed an interesting thing. In spite of the same parents, in spite of the same environment, each child is unique. Different temperaments, attitudes, likes and dislikes, and interests.

I think all of our spiritual character comes through, except memory of course. This character then responds to the influence of the parents, the environment, and it body or genetic code. Thus the spirit is given a body to learn to control and deal with while at the same time learning or relearning the path that we must take to return home. This can easily be used to explain talents and interests that might not otherwise be explainable.
