Question

Dear Gramps,

After the split of the spirits where 1/3 were sent to earth and 2/3 stayed, were any of the 2/3 borderline in their decision and able to change there mind or come to earth for a body and be disruptive here? This was a discussion I had with someone. Thank you.

Jim

Answer

Dear Jim,

Although the scriptures that we have deal almost exclusively with the inhabitants of this earth, our Father’s spirit children inhabit many, many earths. As Enoch said to the Lord,

And were it possible that man could number the particles of the earth, yea, millions of earths like this, it would not be a beginning to the number of thy creations; and thy curtains are stretched out still; and yet thou art there, and thy bosom is there; and also thou art just; thou art merciful and kind forever (Moses 7:30).

And that these infinite earths are peopled by our Father’s children is evidenced by the Lord’s statement to Enoch—

Wherefore, I can stretch forth mine hands and hold all the creations which I have made; and mine eye can pierce them also, and among all the workmanship of mine hands there has not been so great wickedness as among thy brethren (Moses 7:36).

So the split that you talk of was a division among all the spirits that are children of our Father in Heaven and who inhabit all the worlds that the Lord has made. So, we’re really talking about an infinite number.

Now, God said on one occasion,

And the Lord said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am the Lord thy God, I am more intelligent than they all (Abr 3:19).

So there is a spectrum of intelligence among the spirits from the most to the least intelligent. Paralleling the spectrum of intelligence is a similar spectrum of righteousness. Lucifer was a spirit in authority before God. When the Father asked for a plan of redemption for his children Lucifer stepped forth and offered his plan of compulsion—

And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying–Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor (Moses 4:1).

Satan’s arrogant and egotistical plan was rejected by God—

And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first.

And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him (Abr 3:27-28)—

as we read in Isaiah,

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! (Isa 14:12).

We learn from the Doctrine and Covenants that a third part of the hosts of heaven followed after Satan, undoubtedly desiring salvation without merit, and were cast out with him.

And it came to pass that Adam, being tempted of the devil–for, behold, the devil was before Adam, for he rebelled against me, saying, Give me thine honor, which is my power; and also a third part of the hosts of heaven turned he away from me because of their agency (D&C 29:36).

Now, to the point– there is a spectrum of intelligence, and necessarily, righteousness, among the spirit children of God, from the most to the least righteous. I would imagine that the spectrum of righteousness would follow something like a Poisson distribution. So there was a cut-off point; on one side all the spirits followed Satan and on the other side they all followed Jehovah. So there were with the more righteous some who were the most wicked among the righteous–those who very nearly were commanded to go with Satan. They are undoubtedly those that promote evil in mortality; and although worthy to progress to the second estate, where they could acquire physical bodies, are very much under the influence of that evil one, and promote in mortality his agendum. Among them, some will become the sons of perdition, and will be remanded to live with Satan and his hosts in outer darkness forever. Others, who are liars, and sorcerers, and adulterers, and whoremongers, and whosoever loves and makes a lie (D&C 76:103) will eventually inherit only a telestial kingdom.

These are they who suffer the wrath of God on earth.

These are they who suffer the vengeance of eternal fire.

These are they who are cast down to hell and suffer the wrath of Almighty God, until the fulness of times, when Christ shall have subdued all enemies under his feet, and shall have perfected his work (D&C 76:104-106).
