Gramps,

I have a friend who says that he heard from the bishop of my Ward here in Venezuela that when a child dies at birth, the spirit of the child remains looking at the body until it is buried, and the same for an adult who dies. I started to look into this but have not found any references that suggest that this is the case. Can you clarify this? Thank you for your help.

Jose

Dear Jose,

I’m with you! I am not aware of any doctrine that affirms what you have heard, neither have I found in the writings of the General Authorities anything that would verify it. The spirit world is nearby, and without a doubt the spirits can perceive the mortal world, but I would imagine that they are busily occupied where they are, and probably have very little interest in the mortal experience once they have graduated from it.
