Question

Dear Gramps,

Why are temples closed on Sundays? According to me, that would be a perfect day to serve the Lord in his House. And as a temple worker, I would be honored to serve the Lord in His House on His Day. So why do they close temples on Sunday?

Thank you for your answer!

Riccardo

Answer

Dear Riccardo,

Temples hold a unique place in the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are viewed as houses of the Lord, where sacred ordinances are performed, including baptisms for the dead, endowments, and sealings. These ordinances are essential for the salvation and exaltation of individuals and families. However, it is crucial to understand that while temples are vital, they are only one aspect of the gospel.

The temple serves as a place of peace, reflection, and spiritual growth. It is a sanctuary where members can seek guidance, receive inspiration, and draw closer to God. However, the temple experience is distinct from regular church services. For instance, members do not partake of the sacrament in the temple, which is a fundamental aspect of worship during Sunday services. The sacrament is a weekly reminder of Christ’s atonement and a time for personal reflection and renewal of covenants made at baptism.

Moreover, many essential church functions, such as priesthood ordinations, baby blessings, and teaching opportunities, occur within local congregations, known as wards and stakes. These gatherings foster community, support, and service among members. The Church emphasizes that the temple is a complement to these experiences, not a replacement. Therefore, the closure of temples on Sundays allows members to focus on their local congregations and participate in the communal aspects of worship that are equally important to their spiritual growth.

The Importance of the Sabbath

The Sabbath day, observed on Sunday, is a time set apart for rest, worship, and reflection. According to the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Sabbath is a day to honor God and strengthen family bonds. It is a time for members to gather for church services, partake of the sacrament, and engage in activities that uplift and inspire.

On Sundays, members are encouraged to participate in home teaching, visiting others, and organizing service projects. These activities are vital for building community and fostering relationships among members. The Church teaches that the Sabbath is not just a day of rest but also a day of service. By closing temples on Sundays, the Church allows members to focus on these important aspects of their faith, enriching the lives of those around them and sharing the Light of Christ.

The decision to close temples on Sundays is rooted in a desire to balance individual worship with community service. While many members may feel a strong desire to serve in the temple on this holy day, the Church recognizes that the needs of the community must also be prioritized. If temples were open on Sundays, many members would likely choose to serve there instead of fulfilling their other callings and responsibilities within their wards.

To support members and visitors on Sundays, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operates visitors’ centers at many temple locations. These centers provide opportunities for missionary work and education about the importance of temples in the faith. They serve as a bridge between the sacred experiences of the temple and the everyday lives of members, allowing individuals to learn more about the gospel and engage in discussions about their faith.

For those temples that have a visitor’s center, they are, in most cases, open on Sundays, providing a space for members and non-members alike to explore the teachings of the Church and understand the significance of temples. This approach allows the Church to maintain a focus on community service while still offering opportunities for spiritual growth and learning.

Engaging in community service on Sundays can have profound spiritual benefits for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By participating in activities that strengthen relationships and serve others, members can experience a deeper connection to their faith and one another. The act of serving others is often seen as a reflection of Christ’s love and teachings, reinforcing the idea that worship is not solely confined to the walls of a temple.

Additionally, the closure of temples on Sundays encourages members to develop their spiritual lives in diverse ways. By participating in church services, engaging in family activities, and serving in their communities, members can cultivate a holistic approach to worship that encompasses both individual and collective experiences.
