Question

Gramps,

I’ve pondered on the interpretation of my lineage.  In my personal blessing it states that I will receive my blessings through Israel, even to the Godhead itself.  I know that Israel can be also known as Jacob but I’m confused with which specific tribe of Israel I would related to. Are you able to offer any clarity into this matter.

Thanks in advance,

Answer

Hello Bob,

Excellent question.  The Church’s Handbook of Instruction (Book 2) provides guidance regarding patriarchal blessings and lineage declared, and should lineage not be declared then members can follow this procedure,

“If a patriarchal blessing does not include a declaration of lineage, the patriarch may later give an addendum to declare lineage.” (Handbook of Instruction 2, Section 20.12.2)

As pertaining to the language you have provided, if an exact quote, it would appear you may be one that is considered “adopted” to the House of Israel, thus the language “I will receive my blessing through Israel.”

However, a patriarchal blessing is personal and sacred and I am not privileged (without stewardship and authority) to declare exactly what this means.  My recommendation would be to contact your local patriarch and set an appointment to meet with him.  In this meeting, express your thoughts/concerns and he will have a more clear clarification regarding the declaration of your lineage, or together an agreement may result that an addendum would need to be added to your patriarchal blessing.
