Dear Gramps,
My 8 year old grandson asked me today why is cussing bad? I gave him an answer, but I’d like to hear yours. I’m sure it’s better than mine.

Dear Carolan,
I doubt very much that I could give a better answer to your grandson than could you. One good answer would be “Cussing is bad because your grandmother said so!” I’m not kidding. You are very likely a real authority figure to your grandson. He undoubtedly looks up to you, and surely wants to do the things that would please. For him, that may mean more than to say “Cussing is bad because your Father in Heaven said so.” You can tell him that this is what God said—

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain (Exo 20:7).
