Gramps,

I need help. I have been on a discussion board at talkcity titled LDS. On it I have encountered an Anti-Mormon that has been driving the interested away. I have not the scripture knowledge that I should at this time to dispute his stand. I only have my own testimony and it does not help in fighting a soul so set against the church. How do I handle him in a way that will not appear as if I am on his level?

Richard, from Georgia

Dear Richard,

If you don’t want to be on his level, don’t fight with him. It is never profitable to contend with others about religion. Bear your testimony and walk away. We read in 3 Nephi 11:29, that

he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.

The only way that anyone can be convinced of the truthfulness of the gospel is by the influence of the Holy Spirit. If your contender is not susceptible to the influence of the Holy Spirit he will never accept your arguments, regardless of how astute they are.
