Gramps,
I was wondering how the Mormon church sees the Bible. I was taught growing up that the Bible was the inerrant word of God. My husband who used to be a devout member of the Mormon Church states that the Bible has some good parts in it but is largely in error as a whole. If what he says is true then what is the point of reading the Bible at all?

Dear Jean,
It is true that the 8th Article of Faith of the Mormon Church acknowledges that the current editions of the Bible may not be completely true—
We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God,
so possible errors of translation are recognized. But to say that the Bible is largely in error as a whole is a gross exaggeration, and is completely false!
The prophet Joseph Smith, under the inspiration of God, re-translated most of the Bible. The work was never completely finished so the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible was never published as such. However, Bibles that are printed and sold by the Mormon Church are the King James Version, and wherever the Joseph Smith Translation (JST) varies from the King James Version the JST is added as a footnote in the margin. If the change is too great to add as a footnote, the changed translations are included at the end of the Bible in a section identified as JST. These differences are for the most part very minor, and the Bible, as it is written, is used extensively in the Mormon Church, and is recognized as one of the four Standard Works that are the guide to faith for all Church members. The other three standard works are the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price.
