Question

Dear Gramps,

In the history of Adam and Eve, Lucifer was cursed by having badly given of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge and they, however, for having done the same thing in other worlds. This means that Lucifer does not make more this in other worlds? What Lucifer made was good or was badly? Sorry, for my English.

Answer

Dear Bishop Gonçalves,

Satan is the archenemy of God, the epitome and the source of all evil. If he appears to do some good, it is always with evil intent. There is an opposition in all things, and as God is the author and champion of all truth, all goodness, all joy and felicity, so is Satan the author of all lies, all evil, all misery and hatred. This earth happens to be that one unique sphere in the universe to which the Savior of mankind came to work out his mortal probation, and by his great atoning sacrifice, pave the way for eternal life and salvation of all who would take upon themselves His name. This earth, after being transformed into a terrestrial sphere at the beginning of the Millennium, will eventually be again transformed, this time into a celestial sphere, and will become the residence of Jesus Christ, the king of heaven (Daniel 4:37; Book of Mormon, Alma 5:50).Thus, I imagine that it will be the brightest star in the universe.

However, there is an opposition in all things, and this world, in its present state, is the most wicked world in all the universe. The Savior said to Enoch on one occasioǹ—

Wherefore, I can stretch forth mine hands and hold all the creations which I have made; and mine eye can pierce them also, and among all the workmanship of mine hands there has not been so great wickedness as among thy brethren (Moses 7:36).

Thus, this is now Satan’s chief residence. But he will be overcome and sent, with those who follow him, into outer darkness.

Wherefore, he saves all except them–they shall go away into everlasting punishment, which is endless punishment, which is eternal punishment, to reign with the devil and his angels in eternity, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched, which is their torment–

And the end thereof, neither the place thereof, nor their torment, no man knows;

Neither was it revealed, neither is, neither will be revealed unto man, except to them who are made partakers thereof (D&C 76:44-46).

Now, because of the great wisdom of God, He can turn Satan’s evil designs to his own good. It is said that no knife was ever sharpened without being put to a grindstone. By such action soft steel wears away, but hard steel is sharpened. So it is with the temptings of Satan. By being subjected to and overcoming the influence of the adversary we gain moral strength, until we can overcome all evil with righteousness. Such opposition is necessary for us to gain the moral power to overcome all evil and thus be prepared to become one with the Savior. As we read in Romans—

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together (Rom 8:16-17).
