Question

Gramps,

Curious question was brought up. Can spirits embrace in the spirit world? I feel this is one of the great reasons we wanted to receive a body, but I don’t know of the nature of spirit to spirit type of bodies. Thanks for your time and excellent work.

Answer

Hello Rob,

This is definitely a curious question, yet, although curious I would assume it is a question most members have asked themselves at some point.

The main reason we received our bodies was to become as God is, a glorified man with an immortal body (obviously for women, they receive a body to become a glorified woman). Other than this, we do not have many answers as to the reason why a body is important, save that a body connected with spirit, brings a fullness of joy.

In answer to your question, I would draw your mind to JSH:15 which specifies:

“I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak.”

Within this section of verse 15, there are two elements I would focus on:

1. Joseph was “seized” upon

2. Joseph’s tongue was bound

How does a spirit “seize” another person if being a spirit inhibits us from bodily touch? It would appear even as spirits there is some form of bodily connection, embracing, which we do not yet understand.

I am of the opinion that we are able to embrace as spirits. I understand from other’s Patriarchal Blessings that they are told they would be able to embrace the Savior when they leave this life. Whether this embracing is figurative or literal, I am more inclined to believe that it is literal.
