Question

Dear Gramps,

I am getting baptized next week, and wanted to know if it is right for me?? I hear different stories about why it is good, and why it is bad. I’m confused.

Answer

Dear Linda,

You will hear lots of stories about whether the Mormon Church is the true church or not for the rest of your life. The Mormon Church, or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is actually the kingdom of God on the earth. The king of this kingdom is Jesus Christ. He personally manages the affairs of the kingdom through the prophet He calls to preside over His Church. And this organization is designed by the Lord to provide the directions– instructions– teachings that we must follow in order to return to His sacred presence after this mortal life to inherit all the blessings that God has in store for those who love Him and who keep His commandments.

Now those are the facts. But your concern is to know whether or not those facts are true. There is one source that you may access that will tell you the truth about your concern in a manner that will give you complete confidence of the truthfulness of those facts. That source is God the Father. He has invited us, rather commanded us, to pray to Him often, asking for the things that we need. If we ask in faith, that is, with confidence that He hears and answer our petitions, He will surely do it. And by the influence of His Holy Spirit you will receive a sure and unequivocal knowledge that this is indeed God’s Church. Here are His instructions in the matter—

Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things. (Moroni 10:3-5)

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. (Matthew 7:7)

Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.

Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground. (D&C 8:2-3)

Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not. (D&C 6:36)
